MY PHILOSOPHY
Do it yourself. Through this personal mantra, I’ve pushed the limits of my technical and creative abilities. From a young age, I often found myself wishing for something that the world didn’t have to offer yet, so I would simply figure out how to bring those desires to life myself. Now, I would genuinely say that majority of the skills I have (applicable through hobbies or career) were self-taught. In no way am I denying the validity of dependency and assistance from others – I have heavily relied on friends and peers in the past – but a strong sense of independence, aptitude and passion is what shaped and polished my life academically, professionally, and personally.
CGI & Video Games
I specialize in 3D art – box modeling, sculpting, rigging, UV mapping, texturing, etc. The ability to compose a living breathing world or a complex character that can skip and hop is something unique to the 3D medium. I can extend this to game design and create an entire universe waiting to be explored and discovered. Combining narrative, visuals, and responsive design is one of the most fascinating and engaging mediums of expression and art to me. It was this fascination I had with video games that established the foundation for my indie game design journey when I was just 10 years old. I am genuinely impressed by the effort I put in to see myself progress from a 3D program and game engine like fragMOTION and GameMaker to Blender/Maya and my team’s own custom game engine. The former programs required me to carefully and deliberately input numbers to model, animate and rig characters to bring them to life. But with the latter programs, all of that could be done with buttons that would automate the entire process. But hey, you need
Photography
I find photography to be the one of the most beautiful ways to capture the true essence and most poignant qualities of a subject – be it a person, a place, or a simple object. While a photo is taken from only a single perspective, we choose this perspective because it encompasses what we understand the subject to be when the excess is stripped away, and then enhanced by the background and foreground. In terms of portrait photography, there are many things to focus on – body language, wardrobe, location, lighting, composition, etc. With product photography, you need to understand the intricacies of material science and light transport. You, the photographer must consider each and every one of these things. As an editor, you must understand what you want to highlight and what you want to suppress. Everything speaks in an image, everything has a voice and your job as the photographer is to find that voice with a thousand words.
Traditional Animation
I am a big fan of traditional animation – cartoons and anime. To preface, “anime” and "cartoons" are incredibly broad and vague in the sense of art style, narratives, and intent. Some of it I intentionally avoid. Otherwise, there are many series that I’ve come to respect for various reasons. To learn about the nuances of the human experience – strife, failure, love, loss – accompanied by supporting narratives visually is a gift unique to animation. Through deliberate and precise usages of color theory, composition and blocking, character design, musical motifs, and more, ideas and themes are flawlessly delivered to reveal what makes us human.
HOBBIES
Musical Performance
As a violist, everyone makes fun of me, but I can still read one extra clef than them. I also play piano, ukulele, violin, and cello. Singing and vocal coaching is also a fun past time of mine. I've been playing these instruments since elementary school and high school - all of which are self-taught except for the viola, and somewhat piano. It's always fun to make music with friends no matter their level of experience or expertise is.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics and parkour both interest me heavily – to have so much control over your body and feel like you’re defying gravity. I took one summer course in one elementary school and I was told to not come back until I could learn to focus and calm down. I took that devastating defeat and let it fuel the fire to teach myself tumbling passes and floor routines.
Gaming
Some of my favorite game genres are JRPG’s, action-adventure, rogue-like, and rhythm games. Some of my favorite game series are Sonic, Spider-Man, Final Fantasy, Zelda. Some of my favorite rhythm games are jubeat and Taiko no Tatsujin.
Eating
I really like eating, but at the same time I have no standards. As a child I mixed every food together, literally. If it didn't kill me, I'd try it. Might have lost a few brain cells along the way, but it laid the foundation to become the person I am today - obsessed with trying every Oreo and Pop-Tart flavor that comes out. And I can say I have definitely tried at least 90% of the flavors available globally.
